The first time you start the game, you will be presented with the hardware setup menu. You may have to experiment with this to get the setup 'right' for your system/display hardware.
Using my 22" widescreen monitor, and with COG using 'emulate a virtual desktop' (windowed mode - set in winecfg) I found the best windowed mode to be 1152x864, using the LCD (5:4) monitor type.
The exact settings that work for you, are bound to be different, depending on your monitor/screen setup, and whether you use windowed or fullscreen mode in COG.
Once you select your settings, and click 'save & play' or 'save and exit', the setting are tested -- with no native directx installed, it will 'test' your video settings, and ask "Did you see a spinning cube?" -- answer 'yes' even if you did not see a spinning cube. Then it will test your sound settings -- a small window will pop-up, with a 'O' in the middle, and another 'O' circling around it -- this is probably to setup the 'eax' audio surround sound settings. Just click in the window to confirm this, even though you may be hearing nothing at all, then the hardware setup will exit. Sound will work in the game correctly.
