The Temple of Elemental Evil Tips

Installing Temple of Elemental Evil with CrossOver Games for Mac

I love this game it is by far the best implementation of the pen and paper rules
of any D&D computer RPG.  And with new content coming from the Circle of 8 mods,
this game continues to live on.

Oh, and here is the boilerplate disclaimer regarding DRM:

The Digital Rights Management (DRM) software in this program
prevents it from running in CrossOver.  If you are in a legal jurisdiction
which allows removal of such software, you may have luck running this
program.  Unfortunately, CodeWeavers, because they are subject to the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act, will be unable to support you.

Let me open this up with the high level steps and then I will get into the details
of each part.

After all the steps below you can run ToEE in full screen and everything pretty
much works.  The only issue I noticed was the mouse cursor is a white block.
Everything else seems fine and runs with good speed on my 2009 Mac Mini.

QUICK LIST

1. Install ToEE via the CDs
2. Install ToEE TOEE_USA_-PATCH2.EXE
3. [see DRM boilerplate]
4. Unzip the Circle of 8 game fixes (http://www.co8.org) into the ToEE directory.
5. Rename the ToEE movie folder to prevent Bik movies from playing.
6. Launch the game once to test that it runs and exit
7. Manually edit the ToEE.cfg to your screen resolution.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

1. Install ToEE via the CDs

A "Normal" install of ToEE is all that is necessary, but I will include all the
steps here just to be clear.

    a. Load the CD labeled "Install Disc" into your CD-ROM drive.

    b. In CrossOver Games select:
    Configure->Install Software->Install Unsupported Software->Continue

    c. Select "New Bottle" and click "Create Bottle and Continue".

    d. Set the following in the next dialog:

        New Bottle Name = "ToEE"
        Bottle Type = "winxp"

    Click "Create".

    e. Select the ToEE CD for installation labeled "TOEE_INST" and click "Install".
    This should start the ToEE installer.  Some tips for the installer:

        - Install to the default C: drive location the installater chooses.
        - Don't bother to complete the registration information.  Simply close
        the dialog and then click "Never Register".
        - Uncheck the "Launch ToEE" box at the end of the installation.
        - Click on "Finished" in the CrossOver Games dialog after the ToEE
        installer has exited.

2. Install the ToEE Patch v2

Some notes here DO NOT install patch v3.  It causes more problem than it solves
and is nt compatible with the Circle of 8 fan fixes, which you want. If you
wish to learn more browse the forums at http://www.co8.org.  The fan fixes for
ToEE fix all of the problems that the v3 patch attempts to fix and much much
more.  You can download the v2 patch from Atari here:

ftp://ftp.atari.com/patches/toee/TOEE_USA_ANY-PATCH2.EXE

    a. From the CrossOver Games menu select:
       Configure->Install Software->Install Unsupported Software->Continue

    b. Select "Other existing bottle:" and "ToEE" from the menu. Click "Continue".

    c. Click "Choose installer file" and then click "Install"

    d. Browse to whatever location you downloaded the TOEE_USA_ANY-PATCH2.EXE
    patch file.  Select the patch file and click "Use this installer".

    e. Just click "Ok" to start the patching of the game.  When it has finished
    click the "Finished" button in the CrossOver Games dialog.

3. [see DRM boilerplate]

Really am sorry about the edits, here, but for legal reasons we can't allow explicit discussion of how to circumvent copy protection on our website, since it is hosted in a jurisdiction where this is illegal.  Philosophically, we are opponents of the applicable provisions in the DRM that prevent lawful owners of software from circumventing copy protection in order to use it in Crossover, but we must and will remain compliant with the law as it stands, and this includes barring technical discussions of circumvention on our website.  Sorry, again.  This write-up is great.  --admin

4. Unzip the Circle of 8 game fixes into the ToEE directory.

The Circle of 8 mod is the greatest thing to happen to ToEE IMHO.  They have
fixed all the bugs that the vendor couldn't/wouldn't fix and have even added
content.  They are continuing support and releasing of new mods as of this
writing.  You can visit their forums at http://www.co8.org .  The current
version of the mod pack as of this writing is 5.5.0 Beta.

    a. You can download at this URL:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/circle-of-eight-modpack-550-beta/downloads/circle-of-eight-modpack-550-beta

    b. After downloading the beta you'll need extract the rar file.  Mac OSX
    does not come with a rar file extractor by default you will need to download
    one like UnRarX (http://www.unrarx.com/).

    c. Once you have uncompressed the rar file  we need to rename the file
    "Circle of Eight Modpack 5.5.0 BETA.tfm". Open a finder window and browse to
    the file.  This is the only file we need all the others may be discarded.

    d. Right click on the file "Circle of Eight Modpack 5.5.0 BETA.tfm" and
    click "Get Info.

    e. Expand the "Name & Extension:" section of the window and rename the file
    to:

    co8.zip

    And press enter.  Click "Use .zip" when Finder prompts you.

    f. Drag and drop the co8.zip file to the "Temple of Elemental Evil" folder
    Finder window you still have open from Step 3.

    g. From the CrossOver Games menu select:
    Programs->Run Command...

    h. In the "Use Bottle:" field select "ToEE" and click "Open Shell".

    i. In the shell window that pops up type the following commands followed by
    the enter key:

    cd "Program Files/Atari/Temple of Elemental Evil"
    unzip -o co8.zip

    j. After the unzip command is finished unzipping the co8.zip file close the
    window and the CrossOver Games window as well.

5. Rename the ToEE movie folder to prevent Bik movies from playing.

The Bik movies from ToEE do not play.  So, we need to disable them.  Here is
how:

    a. From the CrossOver Games menu select:
    Configure->Manage Bottles

    b. Select the "ToEE" bottle from the left side of the window and click
    "Advanced"->"Open drive C: in Finder".

    c. Browse to "Program Files/Atari/Temple of Elemental Evil/data".

    d. Rename the "movies" folder to "no_movies".

    e. Close the Finder window and the CrossOver Games "Manage Bottles" window.

6. Launch the game once to test that it runs and exit

    a. Launch ToEE from the CrossOver Games menu to test.

    b. Once the game launches immediately click "Quit Game" from the menu to
    exit.

7. Manually edit the ToEE.cfg to your screen resolution.

From the in game config tool you can only get 800x600 resolution set. By
manually setting the resolution from the ToEE.cfg file you can config the game
to run at resolutions up to 1680x1050 without problems.  Even "non-standard"
widescreen configurations can be used.  The game can run as high as 1920x1200,
but there are usually problems like characters turning invisible at those high
resolutions.  So, stick to 1680x1050 and lower for best results.

I am running the game at 1280x1024 @75hz without any problems.  You can figure
out your current display resolution and refresh rate by looking in your System
Preferences->Displays.

Here's how to set it up:

    a. From the CrossOver Games menu select:
    Configure->Manage Bottles

    b. Select the "ToEE" bottle from the left side of the window and click
    "Advanced"->"Open drive C: in Finder".

    c. Browse to "Program Files/Atari/Temple of Elemental Evil/"

    d. Right click on the ToEE.cfg file and click Open With->Other...

    e. Select TextEdit from the list of applications and click "Open".

    f. Find this line:

    video_height=600

    Set this to whatever the vertical resolution is.  For example, if you were
    running at 1280x1024 @75hz you would set this value to 1024.  It would look
    like this:

    video_height=1024

    g. Find this line:

    video_width=800

    Set this to whatever the horizontal resolution is.  For example, if you
    were running at 1280x1024 @75hz you would set this value to 1280.  It would
    look like this:

    video_width=1280

    h. Find this line:

    video_refresh_rate=60

    Set this to whatever the your display refresh rate is.  For example, if you
    were running at 1280x1024 @75hz you would set this value to 75.  It would
    look like this:

    video_refresh_rate=75

    If don't know what you set here just leave it at 60.

    i. Save the file and exit TextEdit.

    j. Close the Finder window and the CrossOver Games "Manage Bottles" window.

    k. Launch ToEE and enjoy.

Other things of note from the in game menu I have been able to use the "High
Quality Cloth" setting as well as the various shadow options.  I would like to
figure out how to fix the mouse icon not diplaying properly.  If anyone has any
tips please post.

Hope this helps people trying to play this game.
