The student version fails to properly detect the cd-rom in the drive at runtime, which is a licensing condition, so it fails to run.
The solution is to check the bottle containing the sketchpad installation, and change the symbolic link in dosdevices to have d: point to /cdrom, or wherever your cdrom drive is.
