The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Tips

Steam: No mp3 codec causes choppy graphics problems

In some cases, the lack of an MP3 decoder in Wine can cause choppy graphics and a lack of in-game music.

The workaround is to install Windows Media Player 9 for Windows 2000 into the Steam bottle. It doesn't matter if the wmp9 installer says it fails: it will create a file called l3codeca.acm in the C:\windows\system32 folder. Then, create a symlink to this file called winemp3.acm (use 'ln -s l3codeca.acm winemp3.acm' in a command line or any decent linux filemanager).

Once you have installed the mp3 codec, music in Oblivion will play and your framerate will go up significantly.
