if Team fortress 2 is crashing then the following maybe will help:
1. open steam.
2. right click on team fortress 2.
3. choos properties.
4. click on: set launch options.
5. type: -dxlevel 90 (you can also write: -dxlevel 80 or -dxlevel 81)
6. now type: -w xxxx -h xxx this sets the resolution because adding the -dxlevel sets the resolution to 800 x 600 automatic. ( x is a number for 1280 x 800 resolution type: -w 1280 -h 800)
You only need to use the -dxlevel launch option once, afterwards it will maintain that direct x level. (Added to original tip by Samuel Bell 10-05-2009)
