It is highly suggested to avoid alt+tab the game on Linux Gnome Desktop environment(tested on Ubuntu 18.04). In most cases the game will recover when returning to game windows after freezing for 5seconds, but rarely it can cause hanging of the whole desktop. My suggested workaround would be to use a workspace switch keybinding, and making a few save files on a different save slots, that way you will be able to just return to your game in a moment by relaunching it.
