On newer distributions, you may be missing some 32-bit compatibility libraries needed for audio-input. On OpenSUSE 12.2 I had to install the "alsa-plugins-pulse-32bit" package for audio input to work. (Steam still said "[ No recording device detected ]", however it did in fact work.)
