Fixing the Brightness Issue in Windowed Mode
Problem: Colors and brightness work fine in fullscreen mode, but are too dark to be particularly playable in Windowed (or Virtual Desktop) mode.
Solution:
Ken Thomases addressed this issue in this thread. He explains:
This is actually much simpler than has been assumed. It's how CrossOver is designed, but there is a workaround.
Software brightness settings work by altering the display gamma curve. So, they affect everything on screen, not just the contents of one window. In order to prevent Windows programs from making everything on screen too bright or dark (or off-color), I wrote CrossOver Mac's support for gamma control to only be in effect for full-screen mode.
In order to fix this, simply follow these instructions:
However, you can quit CrossOver Games and issue the following command in Terminal to change that:
[Other values, besides "always", are "fullscreen" (the default) and "never".]
Note that gamma controls only ever affect the primary display, regardless of where the program's windows are.
This allows the game to control your display's brightness when Crossover is the active window. When a different application or window has focus, the brightness returns to normal, allowing you to multitask seamlessly and without sacrificing the visual experience from the game.
