You could increase the game performance by disabling the generated shadows done for the character models. While in-game, bring up the EF console by pressing ` which is usually the key next to the 1 or F1 and type in
cg_shadows 0
and press enter. If you want shadows enabled, change the 0 to a 1 or up to 3 for more complex shadows.
