Quicken 2016: Fixing startup crash after clean install + update to R12

Applies to Quicken 2016 version below R8 updated to R12 on Debian Stretch

If you perform a clean install of Quicken 2016 and then update to R12, Quicken may crash after opening your data file.  This is actually a known issue on Windows with the R12 patch.   The following worked for me to get Quicken updated to R12 which is required to continue using online services after the split of Quicken from Intuit.

1. Clean install from CD or downloaded installer.  Start Quicken, but do not open a file.  Go to the Help-->About Quicken menu and check the version.  If less than R8, continue.  If already beyond R8, this will not help.

2. Download and install the Q2016 R8 Mondo Patch from here:  https://assistant.quicken.com/patch/ASDES5672FR13/Old_Patches/QW16/QW2016R8MPatch.exe

3. Install the R12 Mondo Patch: https://assistant.quicken.com/patch/QW2016R12MPatch.exe

4. Now run Quicken, open file, and go through the registration process for a Quicken.com user ID and password.
