While using Quicken, reports can be opened. The reports do not open in the current window, but in their own separate window. This window is not a separate entry in the task bar. This can cause problems when a modal dialogue is opened that is obscured by the report window.
For example, I was viewing a report and clicked the 'X' to close it, but it wouldn't close. Time and again I tried to click the 'X', use the 'Close' option in the pull down menu for the window. Nothing seemed to work, the window remained open. I noticed that when I tried to click-to-focus on the window, the title bar remained gray as if another window had focus. I then noticed that the Quicken main window had the focus. In desparation I tried clicking on the Quicken main window, the report window, the Reports window, using the pulldown menu to make the report stay on top, and finally, changing the always on top setting to off. Then I saw what had been obscured for some reason, a dialogue asking if I wanted to save the report since it had been changed. Responding to this, the modal dialogue closed, the report closed and then Quicken closed, just as I had requested it to do earlier.
If a window won't close but still seems to not be frozen (completely unresponsive, no redraw, etc.), it could be because of a modal dialogue. Try focusing on different windows and playing with the always on top setting to see if you can get it to display. Responding to it should allow you to continue using the application normally.

To get around windowing problems - I have found two work arounds - one is to shut down Quicken and restart (not very convenient!). The second one is to drag the inactive window to the side until you can see the corresponding icon in the bottom left of the main Quicken screen (rectangular icons with names corresponding to the inactive window, such as 'Online Update' or 'Report' etc.). Click on the icon and then the inactive window becomes active and you can work on it normally, or close it.
I have not confirmed that this works yet, but will update this when I do.
