Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire Tips

Note: If you are running a 64-bit version of Mac OS X, please reboot into the 32-bit version for installation and gameplay.  Otherwise you risk kernel panics (i.e. system crashes/freezes.)  See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3773 for more information.

These procedures will enable full game play, including movies under CXG 10.x using the QuickTime 3 software provided on the QFG5 disc.  Process tested on Mac OS X 10.6.x on a quad-core Mac Pro.

1. Create a new win98 bottle.
   
2. Run the QFG5 installer within your new win98 bottle.  Perform a standard install (do not attempt a full install, it will get stuck when trying to prompt for the second disc.)  Don't install the extra demos to save space.
   
3. When QuickTime 3 installer launches, select the minimal installation option and don't install any browser plugins (they're useless anyhow.)
4. Install the 1.2 patch available at http://www.sierrahelp.com/Files/Patches/QuestForGlory/QfG5(QFG5UP12).zip.
   
5. From the Configure menu, select Manage Bottles...
6. Select your win98 QFG5 bottle and click the Control Panel tab on the right.
7. Double click to launch the QuickTime control panel.
8. Within the QuickTime control panel, select Video Settings.
9. Select "Safe Mode (GDI Only)".  Close QuickTime.
10. Optionally, within the Wine configuration control panel, you can set the virtual desktop to 800x600.  When the game launches, it will further reduce the desktop size.  Doing this allows you to easily access other apps while playing the game, and enables the in-game cursor to update properly with the hand/eye/inventory icon.  In full screen mode the cursor icon doesn't seem to update properly.
