I changed resolution to 640 x 480 and didn't improve much but then I also switched to windowed mode and the game ran less slowly on my Macbook.
After clicking to start a game, if the screen doesn't change, hit Esc and you'll get the popup menu about whether to quit the game or not. Then you can select "No" and the screen will have updated.
