No Retail version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe needed for OpenTTD 1.0
The tip above is true for the stable version (0.7.5) of OpenTTD. The latest development version (1.0 beta2, which is actually quite stable) provides its own graphics and sounds, so no retail version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe is needed anymore.
OpenTTD before 1.0.0 requires the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe data files in order to function. For OpenTTD 1.0.0 you can use the original Transport Tycoon Deluxe data files, but also it's free alternatives OpenGFX (graphics) and OpenSFX (sound). Please refer to the readme for more information.
In fact I installed OpenTTD with COG 8.1.4 and didn't need the Retail version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe (and I don't own it). The screenshots for this app entry I added show the free Graphics.
