OpenOffice 4 Tips

Java May Be Required

Comments in this thread may be more like moving targets than the final word on anything. Without discouraging posts about negative outcomes, I'd suggest that others might derive significant benefits by learning about your successes.

After I installed OO 4 for Windows into a Win 7 bottle (for which I opted because OO 4 works with Win 8), I could open existing MS Office Word and OO Writer wordprocessing documents, but neither Excel nor Calc spreadsheets: OO indicated that Java was required, but an error occurred when I tried to install Java 7 using its CrossTie in the C4 database.

I downloaded Java for Windows from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp, installed it into my OO 4 bottle (contrary to what the CrossOver installer advised), simulated a reboot of the bottle, and found that I could open both types of spreadsheets, but I haven't been able to open existing Base (OO database) files, and a check of Base's Tools | Options | Java indicates that no JRE (or Java Runtime Environment) is installed. I can't pursue this now, but may look to my OO installation on an actual Win 7 computer for ideas about what to try next.
