Microsoft Outlook 2010 Tips

Outlook won't accept password on Linux

This tip is for Linux users only.

When accessing an exchange account, either via LAN or remotely (RPC over HTTP), Outlook never accepts your password. Attempts to login just refresh the login dialog, no attempt to connect is made.

Newer versions of the ntlm_ath library (3.6.1+) changes the default authentication from NTLM to NTLMv2. You can check your version of ntlm to see if it's 3.6.1 or newer.

ntlm_auth -V

Add the following line your "smb.conf" file (which is usually in /etc/samba/smb.conf ) in the [global] section

client ntlmv2 auth = no
Then re-start winbind

sudo service winbind restart
You should only have to do this once.

Note: NTLM is insecure. Your password may be intercepted by third party. Don't do it unless you are really sure you need this exact configuration to work or if you are connecting over the Internet without VPN. Otherwise, switch to NTLMv2 for better security.
