Microsoft Outlook 2007 Tips

"Cannot open this item. The text formatting command is not available."

The following error may occur with installers that package SP2, or after the application of SP2 (but does not occur with all instances of SP2 being installed):

Cannot open this item. The text formatting command is not available.
It may not be installed correctly. Install Microsoft Office Outlook
again.

This error occus because in some instances a separate, non-identical "Office12" direcotry is installed into the Office 2007 bottle, and the Outlook application launcher is pointing to the wrong "outlook.exe" file (as there are now 2). Specifically, there is now a "../drive_c/Office12" directory that's being pointed to - this is the wrong directory. The correct directory is "../drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12"

The fix is to de-activate the pre-existing Outlook launcher and create a new one from the proper .exe file.

On Mac -Open a finder windows and head to /(home)/Applications/Crossover.  This “Crossover” is a folder, not a .app launcher, and it contains the application launchers for MS Office. Delete the contents of this folder. Now, in Crossover’s top menu bar, head to Configure>Refresh Programs menu. This will wipe out the Programs menu, eliminating the faulty launch icons.

Now, head to Crossover's Programs>Run Command menu. Highlight the "Microsoft Office 2007" bottle, and click on "browse". This will open up to the "drive_c" of the bottle. From here, browse to

"drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/OUTLOOK.EXE"

Select this "OUTLOOK.EXE" file, and then choose "Save Command to Programs Menu". This will create a new Outlook icon in your Programs menu that will point to the correct instance of Outlook, eliminating the error.

On Linux - Open up Crossover's "Manage Bottles" menu, highlight the "Microsoft Office 2007" bottle, and then go to Control Panel>Edit Menus. Un-check the "Outlook" menu item, and then "Apply" and "ok".

Now, head to Crossover's Run a Windows Command menu. Highlight the "Microsoft Office 2007" bottle, and click on "browse". This will open up to the "drive_c" of the bottle. From here, browse to

"/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/OUTLOOK.EXE"

Select this "OUTLOOK.EXE" file, and then choose "Create Launcher". To put the Outlook launcher back in the same place (inside Windows Applications>Microsoft Office), choose "Start Menu>Programs>Microsoft Office", and then click "Create". This will create a new launcher called "OUTLOOK" in your Windows Applications>Microsoft Office menu that will launch the correct instance of Outlook, eliminating the error.
