When the cursor goes over many of the buttons on the screen, pressing the mouse button selects the button (i.e. it becomes highlighted or what have you), but it isn't actually "pressed"; i.e. the result doesn't occur. This is correlated with the fact that you cannot click on a button while the mouse is still (as mentioned by a previous poster); you have to try click it repeatedly while slightly moving the mouse.
