While MapSource does work for me, there are a few gotchas I've noticed along the way.
1. When you are uploading maps to the device, and it asks you to change CDs, make sure to wait until the new CD has been mounted by linux. Otherwise, MapSource errors out and you have to start over.
2. I notice that sometimes MapSource will want a different CD, but doesn't release the old one. You just have to fiddle until it happens.
3. Until you set up a permanent modprobe, you'll have to sudo modprobe garmin_gps each time you have restarted and want to communicate with the GPS unit.
4. Periodically the software has trouble communicating with the unit, and errors out. This hasn't been too annoying, but does happen.
