When installing with 4.2, or 5.0 you will need to run the installation twice (either Lotus Smart Suite 9.6 or 9.8). The first time around installs the MSI installer. Let the first run finish, then run setup with 'Unsupported' app. It seems to work better to give the actual path to the msi installer and setup than to just tell cxoffice to install from the CD.
Another problem that will stop setup midstream, is the need for a database driver already installed in windows. Many database programs (Wordperfect for one) use the Borland database driver which can be preinstalled so that the Lotus installer does not hang.
