Legend of Grimrock Tips

D3D Out of Memory Error

This error occurs when you try and run the game fullscreen at too high a resolution (1600x1200 and above). There are a number of ways to work around this.

The easiest way for a Mac user to work around this problem is to set your screen resolution to something reasonable such as 1280x720 before you run the game for the first time. The game seems to remember this resolution, so you only need to do it once.

Another easy method is to set the "Emulate a virtual desktop" checkbox for the bottle. In CrossOver select Configure -> Manage Bottles... then select your bottle from the list, switch to the Control Panel tab and launch the Wine Configuration tool. In the Wine Configuration tool, select the Graphics tab and there you will see the "Emulate a virtual desktop" checkbox. The desktop size doesn't seem to matter because the game will try and run at 1152 x 864 under most circumstances which works fine.

If you want to switch away from the emulated desktop method so that you run the game full screen, you will probably need to use the game's Options menu to set a reasonable screen resolution before turning off the emulated desktop. Once you are running full screen you will probably want to use the games Options menu to change the resolution again because the emulated desktops always have a 4:3 aspect ratio which probably doesn't match your screen. Don't select 1600x1200 or higher.

So you selected 1600x1200 on the game's Options menu and now nothing works. You are going to have to fix it the hard way. Mac users will find a new folder in their Documents folder called "Almost Human". This is not hidden somewhere special in a bottle or anything, it's a normal folder in your normal Mac Documents folder. I have no idea where this is on Linux systems, but there is a good chance that it's exactly the same. Inside the Almost Human folder there is a Legend of Grimrock folder and inside that is a file called grimrock.cfg. If you are command line sort of person, you can just edit this file with vi or nano or emacs. If you aren't a command line sort of person, then you will need to use TextEdit. Just double click on the file and when your Mac says that it doesn't know what application to use to open the file, select "Choose Application..." and use the dialogue box to select the TextEdit application. The very first line in grimrock.cfg sets the screen resolution, and just adjust the numbers to something like "1280 x 720". Don't forget to save the file.
