iPod support remains hard. It requires you to make some modifications as root, modify configuration scripts for hotplug and generally have a good understanding of linux.
We are working to improve this for a future release and automate things. But if you are unfamiliar with doing hardware support for linux, i would highly suggest you wait and do not try to get the iPod working.
