Installation is a breeze -- note that you can cancel the pdf reader installation, the pdf documentation should get handled by your system's pdf reader.
There are three (3) levels of configuration for this title;
1. the winecfg settings in crossover (don't touch these unless you have to) 2. the games own configuration program 'il2set.exe' 3. the ingame options dialogs
Don't touch settings in (1) above, especially 'emulate a virtual desktop' - if this is enabled, the game doesn't want to run.
If you want the game to run in windowed mode, set this in (2) above [this option is also available with the ingame settings menus]
If you want to use a joystick, turn this on in (2) above. Then the joystick will appear in the ingame controls settings.
Note: the game doesn't seem to let you remap the joystick functions...or rather, decides for you what your joystick functions will map to, depending on what your joystick actually identifies itself as. In linux, using the 'analog' joystick module, you can change what the joystick identifies as (and what functions it supports) by passing insmod parameters to the analog module at module load time using 'map(x)' arguments.
Note 2: Both 'opengl' and 'directx' video modes seem to work, however at maximum detail settings I was seeing all the cockpit controls&guages disappearing into a white-out. The 2nd highest detail level was working fine and looking good though.
Note 3: If you use a dual-screen setup (twinview or otherwise), be sure to set windowed mode in (2) above before you start the game [**not** in (1) above using winecfg]
Note 4. In linux using a nvidia videocard, you will need to be running the proprietary nvidia linux driver, not the 'nv' driver shipped with X.
