Symptom: any text is missing/blurry/generally unreadable, not just in GameMaker, but in all applications.
Solution: according to
this entry in the Wine FAQ:
Create a text file settings.txt with the following contents:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
"ClientSideWithRender"="N"
Save this file in your home directory.
Use the cxrun tool ("Run a Windows Command") to run:
regedit "/home/username/settings.txt"
in every affected bottle. (If you are using Mac OS X, you will need to use /Users/
)
