Forte Agent Email and Newsreader Tips

Moving your Agent installation (from Wine or Windows)

If you are switching from a Wine installation to a Crossover Office installation (or simply moving from Windows to Linux and haven't set Agent up in Wine yet) and want to keep your Agent the way it was, with all of your email up to the time of the new installation, follow this simple process. You can also copy your Windows /Agent folder to a CDROM and copy the contents of the folder there instead if you don't already have it running under Wine. Either way will work, but these directions explain how to copy your Agent installation in Wine over your basic installation in Crossover Office. The main difference is that you simply copy from your CDROM instead of from your Wine directory and make sure you don't end up with a directory structure like C:\Program Files\Agent\Agent, which would mean that you copied the folder into the contents of the other folder with the same name. It's easier to copy the contents of one /Agent folder into the other ?Agent folder and you won't have to be concerned about that.

Now, to continue with directions for switching from Wine (or Windows) to Crossover Office:

Don't delete your Wine installation yet--you need your Agent files (unless you really WANT to start all over and lose your past email messages)!

Install Agent using Crossover Office and don't run the program--yet. If you are asked if you want to enter your registration code, you probably chose to run the program. You can cancel out of it or add your code, but don't waste your time setting everything up again, all of your accounts and newsgroups and settings and such.

Now, find out where you have your "Wine" Agent installation and where your Crossover Office installations are. Your Wine install should be under:

/home/yourname/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Agent.

You will need to enable "view hidden files" under the view menu in your file manager or you won't be able to see hidden folders like .wine (any folder that has a dot for the beginning of the name will be hidden if you don't enable this option). With a file browser like Krusader, Thundar, or Nautilus (or your favorite file browser), click inside the Agent directory and click  on a file, then select all files, then copy them to the clipboard. Go to  your Crossover Office directory for Agent, which will look something like:

/home/yourname/.cxoffice/Agent/drive_c/Program Files/Agent

Paste the files and folders that you copied into there. This should insert your product key files and transfer your current setup, along with all of your email. You should  be able to run Agent from the menu created by Crossover Office under Windows Applications. Doing it this way avoids having to set up everything again and gives you access to all of the messages that you had in your other installation.
