If the Free flight screen is corrupted you can still use free flight, you just need to click near the bottom right of the window where the 'Fly now' button is. All of the aircraft, airports and so on can be selected from the menu when the game is running.
A user has supplied a bottle for FSX on the Porting Team (www.portingteam.com) website which has a fix for this problem. I can't supply the fix as it is not my work. The bottle with the fix in is 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X (Deluxe) SP2' in the port database. The file is gscreateflight.spb. Installation instructions are included in the bottle.
