The following tip was submited to the forums from forum user xhcl below is a copy of the post
Post copy start Looking at WineHQ recently I read some posts about adding Registry keys that fix a lot of problems FFXI has been having in Wine
so I decided to try it out in Crossover and so far it has fixed a lot of problems I've been having in 7.2.0 such as:
Full Screen not working
POL window not drawing right
The "black bar" problem ingame if your background resolution is higher than the overlay
Disappearing Character models depending on the camera angle
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wine > Direct3D
Add a value called "OffscreenRenderingMode" and set it to "fbo"
I also opened winecfg and set pol.exe to run in vista mode. The bottle
ffxi is installed in is a XP bottle I dont know if winecfg will
overwrite that or not, but since adding these tweaks the game has been
made much much more playable. Post copy end This I can confirm fixes alot of issues faced with ffxi in wine this fix is safe to use on vanila wine as well as crossover games. It does solve screenfliping slightly improves performance in some areas as well as resolves the issues mentioned in the above post
This also allows you to turn off the emulation of a virtual desktop outlined int he tip above.
Is this the perfect solution? No
Will there still be issues ? Yes
Does it make the game more playable? Yes
You can monitor this link http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1992
it is the link to the Wine app db entry for this game often times those hacks work here as well
