Since this game requires tweaks I would recommend a fresh (new) bottle for installing Fallout 3.
This works with the steam version as well as the original and Game Of The Year Edition.
Install in a WinXP bottle. Download and Install the latest patch from
Fallout 3 Patch. Download Games For
Windows Live Disable and run it in your fallout 3 bottle and disable G4WL.
For multi-core processors (taken from NSLW on winehq.org)
1) Open ~/My Games/Fallout3/FALLOUT.INI
2) Find bUseThreadedAI=0 and change it to bUseThreadedAI=1
3) Add iNumHWThreads=2 after bUseThreadedAI=1
4) Save file and launch Fallout 3
This is essential for good performance and for proper sound.
For a sound fix, download wine 1.1.37 from
www.winehq.org and install or compile (you can compile without installing by going to your directory where you downloaded the .tar.bz2 and ./configure then make but don't make install, then your file should be in ~wine-1.1.37/dlls/winmm), then find winmm.dll.so. It should be in ~/usr/lib/wine/ and copy winmm.dll.so to ~/Home/cxgames/lib/wine/ or /opt/cxgames/lib/wine/
If you have the GOTY edition of Fallout 3 the DLC/expansions should install and work fine.
Also if you are having issues with locks and computers in game like this
image Please use this fix.
"Run a Windows Command" from your Crossover Games menu or folder. Then you will want to run "regedit" under your fallout 3 bottle. Then try to force GLSL on(HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D/UseGLSL = "enabled")
If Direct3D isn't in your Wine key, then add a new Key called "Direct3D"(exactly as shown without the quotes).
Once you have done that, click on the Direct3D key and add a new string. Call it "UseGLSL"(exactly as shown without quotes)
Now in the right pane of the window right click "UseGLSL" and modify. Enter "enabled"
Close it up and start the game. It works fine for me on Linux, however I have heard that with mac's there is an issue with reading off the dvd to play the game...
Here is a link for the
winmm.dll.so (only for Linux, sorry mac users you will still have to compile/install it yourself) from wine-1.1.37 to replace the one you have. I will try to keep it updated but I can't make any promises. First come first served for the time being.
With the latest Crossover Games 9.1 the FALLOUT.INI and the sound fix's are no longer necessary. However if you are using an older version of Crossover Games they still may be necessary.
