In CrossOver Mac (and I assume CossOver Linux too) Editor works well with the formats .docx and .text created in Microsoft Word however, it cannot sensibly read .doc or .rft files created in Word. On the other hand it works well with all four formats created in Bean and therefore I suspect other Mac word processors too. If you are using the Word add-in (see the relevant entry in Tips and Tricks) and working in the .doc format, you can actually resave the document in the likes of Bean and then successfully make your edits in Word.
