Dungeons & Dragons Online Tips

Frequently (and Infrequently) Asked Questions

** What do I need to run DDO?

An active DDO account, CrossOver Games, PyLOTRO and the full-download version of the client. (See the Installation tips below for details)
** How do I get a DDO account?
Visit http://www.ddo.com or http://www.ddo-europe.com and register to get a key, or purchase the retail box.
** The installer fails to install .NET
This is a known issue and only affects the Launcher. Disregard those errors.
** Will the Trial or DVD installs work?
The Trial version uses Turbine Download Manager ("TDM"), which is known to be incompatible with CXG/WINE. The original DDO DVD may have outdated files that are not compatible with PyLOTRO. Newer DDO DVDs should work without issue. If possible, It is best to download the whole thing.
** What is PyLOTRO, and why do I need it?
PyLOTRO is alternative Launcher/Patcher for DDO. Both the original Launcher and TDM are known to be incompatible with CXG/WINE. Without PyLOTRO, it is very difficult to patch and log in to the game. (Patching must be started manually)
** PyLOTRO is telling me it cannot find Language Files
Verify that the path to the game directory is set in PyLOTRO. If this is set incorrectly (or not at all) no language files can be found.
** DDO has no sound (Mac)
Although the System Requirements list WindowsXP as a minimum, running LOTRO in a Windows XP bottle will have full sound failure. Using a Windows 2000 bottle will have game sounds, but pre-rendered cut scenes (i.e. movies) will not have sound.
** DDO has no sound (Linux)
Under Linux setting the sound system to OSS will give you game sounds but not cut-scene sounds, setting it to ALSA should give you both, however at the moment pulseaudio and ALSA don't get on very well (from a CXG point of view) so you may experience game crashes caused by pulseaudio crashing - disabling pulseaudio before playing should work but some distributions will respawn pulseaudio if it is stopped (they must be expecting it to crash a lot
** Windowed game loses focus
Use the winecfg tool (under configuration) and untick "allow the window manager to control the windows", you might also need to untick "emulate a virtual desktop" as well.
