There seem to be problems when accessing files mounted on network file systems. Files never actually open and a reset is neccessary. Network file systems that have exhibited this behaviour are Novell, Samba and NFS. Server used was Novell Open Enterprise Server SP2 (Based on SLES9SP3). If anyone has had more success with others, please comment.
Edit: with the new Gvfs front in Ubuntu, working with network files is like working with local ones. You will find all your mounted shared folders in ~/.gvfs
