I wrote a report of my experiences which I posted, here is the most important part.
In game main menu -> options -> video
I found out that the Frame Buffer messes up the 3d, so uncheck it. Full screen messed up the text for me, so I had to uncheck it and run it windowed at a resolution that looked good on my monitor. From my experience Graphics Detail needs to be on low or the game will crash (atleast for now with version 8.1.4 and the 2.4Ghz Core Duo Macbook Pro I am using).
