Diablo II Tips

Install Battle.net Version With Movie Playback

These procedures were tested using a Quad-Core Mac Pro running OS X 10.6.x and CXG 10.1.x.  These procedures also assume you are installing the Battle.net version of the game.  Following these procedures ensure the game is fully functional, including playback of movies.

  1. Create a new Windows XP (winxp) bottle.  Name it something like "Diablo II."
  2. From the Config menu, select "Manage Bottles..."
  3. Select your Diablo II bottle and click the "Control Panel" tab from the right pane.
  4. Double-click the Wine configuration control panel to launch it.
  5. Within the Wine Configuration control panel, click the "Graphics" tab.
  6. Select "Emulate a virtual desktop" and specify a size of 800x600.
  7. Under Direct3D, change "Vertex Shader Support" to "None".
  8. Click "Apply" and "OK" to commit the changes.
  9. From the Programs menu, select "Run Command..."
  10. Within the Run Command window, select your Diablo II bottle.  For the Command, click the "Browse.." button and locate the installer you downloaded from Battle.net for Diablo II.  Use it to complete installation of Diablo II.
  11. Download the latest Windows patch/update for Diablo II from Blizzard's website (http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=20758).  At the time of this writing it is 1.13c.  Be sure to download the version from the "Original" category.
  12. Use the same Programs -> Run Command... option to install the patch/update within the Diablo II bottle.
  13. From the Programs menu, select Diablo II -> Video Test.
  14. Run the Video Test.
  15. When the test is complete, select "DirectDraw (2D): DirectDraw HAL".
  16. Try launching Diablo II.  It should now be fully functional.
Note: With this configuration, you may experience a delay on startup of the game.  That is, the virtual desktop window will appear black for 30 - 45 seconds before the introductory "Blizzard" movie begins playing.
