Pressing ALT doesn't show dropped items on the ground for you, the Window Manager is stealing that key combination.
Quick fix suggestion: Since ALT key is required by the Window manager the easiest fix for that is to change game preferences, and map the "X" key for this function.
For Fedora users: You can fix it, by visiting System->Preferences->Look and Feel->Windows, and setting the movement key to Control(CTRL) or "Super Key" (Windows key). Keep in mind thou CTRL key is needed for running in the game, so you might break that functionality.
