Dead Space 3 Tips

Installing and running

This game runs great on an 12.1.0 Linux. Using an up to date Gentoo x64 build with a fx-8150 and 580GTX. On max settings and 1080 resolution, it ran flawlessly at probably >60fps. I only have tested campaign mode so far, not co-op.

While the game runs good, Origin is bloated and junk, and can be quite difficult to deal with.

It took me several installation attempts so below are my notes :
  • If installing from the CD ( downloading in Origin usually doesn't work ), then you can't do a multi-cd install because it won't release the lock on the dvd drive. Copy the contents of both CD's to some-directory, and then binded it to /mnt/dvd. ( mount --bind /some-directory /mnt/dvd ).
  • I used a fresh "Steam" bottle. Launched the Install Software cxoffice app, chose "Steam" from the list and made a new bottle, installing it and all of it's dependencies.
  • When done go back to the Install Software app, choose "Other Application", then "Steam" bottle you just created, and then /mnt/dvd as the source directory (it should recognize it as a dvdrom)
  • Be patient with the installer and Origin, they may seem to freeze up for several minutes randomly.
  • After you start installation it will update Origin, let you login, activate game, accept license, etc.
  • When that's through you'll see an installation progress bar at the bottom of the Origin Application. It should move to 100% rather quickly. It took me about 5-10min on my ssd.

I had several problems when it actually "finished" the installation:

  • Twice it finished and let me click on the game and select the "Run" button. Once it launched the game immediately crashed, and i had to forcibly kill everything to get control back. After trying to launch Origin again it said the game wasn't finished installing, yet wasn't actually doing anything. When restarting Origin after that, it automatically deleted the entire game directory. My guess is if it detects a problem with the installation or something it just deletes everything without warning you. If it deletes the game directory in Program Files/Origin Games/ then you'll have to use cxrun and run the Origin Uninstall application and start back over from installing the "Other application" off the dvd.
  • If it never leaves the 100% point and the game never goes out of installing mode (the run button becomes available when you click on the Dead Space 3 icon) then give it some time! If you stop the process to early you'll wind up with the same problems above. Wait a good 15 minutes. If you want you can search for modified files, ex: `find ~/.cxoffice/some-bottle/drive_c/Program\ Files/Origin\ Games/ -mmin -5`. Every couple minutes it was writing some ole network errors to a log, I presume after so long it gave up, and concluded the installation.
  • If after running successfully the first time it goes back into "Installing mode" immediately after exiting the game and refuses to let you close out of Origin. Look for the EAProxyInstaller process, and any other wine/exe process. There was a second one that had the word install in it, I can't recall what. Killing both of those and waiting a couple more minutes released the second/fake installing mode, and let me close Origin. That problem only happened the once.

The biggest problem is launching Origin! When you go to run the Origin application inside the bottle ( even if you launch the Dead Space 3.exe -> it actually launches the Origin.exe ), it may or may not actually run. I do the following :

  • Have a process monitor running sorted by CPU usage. If you launch origin and you see it taking up a lot of CPU ( 25%-75% in my case ) then it's most likely not going to work.
  • If it's going rouge with the CPU usage, give it 1-2minutes to make sure it doesn't launch ( I've found not waiting any time does not help, and can take longer for some reason ).
  • kill the origin.exe process.
  • go into the bottle manager and "Quit Bottle" which should stop related processes.
  • I also use a `killwindows.sh` script that looks for and wine, cx, exe, etc process' and makes sure theres nothing hung up anywhere.
  • go back and launch Origin again.

Sometimes I might have to repeat the above steps 5+ times to get Origin to actually launch. I had a few times that issue occur when trying to install the application (first phase of the install - never launched - high cpu) and i pretty much followed the same steps.

After Origin actually opens up (it may take it a minute to display the window) it'll probably be on the "Store" tab. Sometimes the store page doesn't load and remains white, sometimes it does.  It can take the Origin application about 1-2 minutes after launching to become fully responsive (assuming because its loading that Store page and whatever is wrong with that code). Wait until the app is instantly responsive when you hover over and click on things, until you try to launch the game.

You might need to disable the cloud sync. Right click on game -> View Details -> Cloud tab -> uncheck cloud sync. When you sync it, the next time you launch your game it does appear to upload your saved games, but once you start to actually play the game it crashes.

Downloadable content seems to work, the pre-order pack I got downloaded and applied to my local game once opened.

Once you're in the game it runs great! Just have to get past Origins mess. When I have more time and patience I'll try to find better ways to deal and fix the Origin application problems, and update my review with co-op mode.
