Daikatana HowTo by Bear
I sometimes find copies of older games in the cheapie bargain bin down at our local software shop. I purchased Daikatana quite a while ago and every so often give it a go to see if it will run in Xandros. The prompt for this effort was the recent WineX release of Cedega 4.1
It turned out that the new Cedega didn't want to install it either but being the stubborn "zealot" I am I kept at it and actually have it running in Xandros. Heres how.
First off my copy of Daikatana is a "Smart Saver" version purchased for less than 10 bucks (sku #381468) It is version 1.0
I am running a NVidia GeForce 4 video card and have no idea whether this will work with a Radeon or any other video card.
I am using Xandros 2.0 Deluxe for this install with numerous updates applied. There could be some other apps or libraries helping me to success that I am unaware of.
In preparation for the install go to the following site and download an update for Daikatana. You will need it.
http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/CustomerSupport/FaqSearchResults.jsp?problemType=13&searchText=&game=61&platform=3
There are 3 downloads listed there. In my case I needed the Daikatana 1.0-1.2 patch to bring my version to the latest version. Save the file to a location for later.
Ok, on to the install. 1. If you are using Xandros 2.0 Deluxe your system comes with a copy of Crossover Office. Much to my surprise, Cossover Office actually ended up being able to install and run this game with better results than Transgaimg's Cedega.
Insert the install disk into your cd drive. Crossover should start the install automatically. Use all of the installer defaults to install the game. Be sure to use the "full installation" option.
When the install finishes do not start the game.
2. After the Crossover install of the game finishes, leave the installer cd in your cd drive. Open the Xandros File Manager and find the location where you saved the earlier downloaded update patch for Daikatana. Right click on the file and choose "Open With" "Crossover Wine" (or just double click on it) The update patch installer should start. Just follow the defaults until it finishes. Do not start the game.
3. After the update is finished remove the cd from the drive. Daikatana contains numerous cinematic scenes which are on the cd. The reason for running the patch is that the patch removes the requirement for having the cd in the drive. One of the problems with running Daikatana in Linux is this dependence on the movies being run from the cd. They do not work in Linux. By removing the cd after you install the patch you will not be forced to run these movies that will not run in Linux anyway.
4. Crossover Office will have created an menu entry and icon for you at "Launch Menu/Windows Applications/Programs/Eidos Interactive/Daikatana". You can simply start the game from there or you can create a desktop shortcut by dragging and dropping the "Play Daikatana" icon on your desktop and choosing "Copy Here".
5. Start the game, but before diving into the action I suggest you make the following changes in your options menu.
1. Turn OFF the movies. They sometimes will work in the game but I experienced an occasional freeze that required a reset of XWindows. Go to "Options" and uncheck the button for "Play Intro Movie". 2. Adjust your brightness in "Video" options by using the Brightness control and the Intensity control. On my system the game started with a extremely dark setting making visibility of the maps impossible. By playing with the 2 settings mentioned I was able to bring a more normal visibility setting into play. 3. Adjust your video resolution to your normal desktop settings. The game starts in a very low res setting, 640x480 if I remember correctly. I run at 1280x1024. I did not find my setting but I did find one that was a notch just below that which helped the games visuals a lot.
Some closing notes:
There are a few glitches to watch for.
One is the keyboard controls tend to work perfectly sometimes and other times not hardly at all. Sometimes I would start the game and the player keyboard controls would work exactly like they are meant to with a "Tribes" style of player control where "w" is forward, "s" is back etc. Other times I started the game the controls were either on other keys or did not work at all. In that case you may have no other choice but to use the ctrl+alt+backspace key combo to reset XWindows.
Surprisingly enough there were a few multilayer servers running Daikatana on the Internet. I was able to join games, usually, and killed a couple of other players in them. (as long as the keyboard was functioning)
Another surprise was that Crossover played the game using OpenGL in all of its 3d goodness. I did not have to choose that, it was already chosen for me in the game and graphics looked good and speed was fine.
Well I hope that helps anyone who is interested in this game.
