Interesting. I switched on the "Emulate a Virtual Desktop" (at 800x600) in winecfg to be able to grab an acceptable screenshot. Suddenly everything works, including full-screen animations and sub-titles. I'll have to re-run the entire game once more to confirm it before upgrading it to Gold but it sure looks promising.
In order to have full disclosure, while having winecfg open, I let it install the audio-drivers as well. There was no problem with the sound before so it should not have changed anything but you never know.
