I tried installing Civ III using CXOffice 4.1. The initial startup screen is black, meaning that you have to hunt around for the install button. After that, the install runs fine to the end of its copying files from CD. It created a desktop icon successfully. It asked if you wanted to register the product. However, the installer did not exit cleanly thereafter, requiring me to kill it after waiting several minutes.
The application would not start, giving a message of "Unload the debugger and try again." The geeks here at the ranch tell me that that's a copy protection issue.

I was unable to successfully install Civilization III Gold Edition in either a Win98 or WinXP bottle on the following machine:
Soyo SY-7ISA+ Intel i815 Motherboard Intel Pentium III 866 MHz Processor 512 MB SDRAM PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 AGP 8x 256 MB DDR Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 PCI Sound Card (SB0220) Samsung CD-RW/DVD Drive Model: TS-H492A/RSWN Dual Boot openSUSE Linux 10.3/Windows XP Pro CodeWeavers CrossOver Games for Linux Version 7.1.2
Almost immediately after the installer begins to copy files, I get a pop-up window with the following message:
Component Transfer Error
Component: CD_Root_Files_Protected File Group: Autorun[ALL] File: D:/ifeel.ifr Error: Not ready
and the installation process terminates. My Disk 1 is labelled as Part # 24868CD1.
