Civilization III Tips

[8.1.4 Ubuntu 9.04] Unpatched 1.07f version

Civ 3 is a temperamental application and after some experimentation, it works to a silver level.

This procedure was tested working on ubuntu 9.04 amd64 kernel, using cxgames 8.1.4 fresh install.

Note, if you have the unpatched CD version (I have v1.07f), this should work.  Don't patch the app to 1.29f.

  1. Install application using a winxp bottle.
  2. navigate to the application directory using your file manager (eg: nautilus)
  3. copy and paste LSANS.ttf into the game directory
  4. rename the copy of LSANS.ttf to LSANS.fot

The game should now run without text corruption.  There appears to be no cd-check for this version, but if patched to v1.29f the game fails to launch, complaining about a debugger in memory.  This appears to be a symptom of copy protection code.
