Civilization II Tips

Successfully working with Civilization II:

Based upon previous tips & tricks and some experimenting, I have found the following for running Civ2.
(At least on Crossover Games 8.1.4 for Mac--Snow Leopard)

Installation:
Installation into a Win98 bottle should proceed fine, with a simple error at the end saying it cannot locate or run program manager.  Unfortunately the game will not load into the program menu correctly.

Starting the game:
1. Disable audio drivers: Before you run the game, you'll have to deactivate the audio driver.  Select the bottle and the Control Panel tab.  Double-click the winecfg option. Then choose the Audio tab and uncheck all sound drivers.
2. Manually locate the program: Because the icon and menu item do not correctly appear, you will need to do the following in the Crossover menu:
Programs > Run Command
On the menu that appears, choose the appropriate bottle.  Then select Browse and find the proper file, which should be found in:
drive_c > MPS > CIV2
Choose file Civ2.exe
Then choose Open and (so you don't have to do this again) Save Command to Program Menu
Now each time you want to run, you can just choose it from the program menu.
When you first run the game, the screen will be black; click in the middle to get it to appear.

Keeping the game running:
It seems that there are features in the game that cause it to crash, although I have not found them all yet.  It seems that these may include: civilopedia, help menu, and movies.  Because of this, once you start a game, the default settings will cause a crash upon the first discovery.  To avoid this, (in the game) go to the following menus:
Game > Graphic Options
Uncheck the Civilopedia for Advancements (That's the real culprit, but you can uncheck all if you want to be safe).
Game > Game Options
This may not be necessary, but for safe measure, you can uncheck the Sound Effects and the Music.
Now you should be good to go.  Note that there are still hangups, such as:
-game may play very slow

Known Issues:
With the above changes, I have been able to play for many turns without any crashes.  Be it known, however, that there are a few known issues:
- Play is slow. The more units you have active and the more of the map is uncovered, the slower things seem to go.
- Sometimes the save menu does not appear. In such cases, the window IS actually there, but does not appear; you can just hit enter to save using the default name. I don't know anything to fix this at this point.
- Sometimes units may flash slowly or disappear when they are active (zooming out helps this sometimes, as does clicking on the unit in the menu on the right side of the screen).
- If desired, you can set Crossover to run the game in an emulated window--this doesn't change/fix anything.
