Getting Civ II to work on Crossover Games 14.0.3 for Mac (at least for OS 10.10.1 Yosemite), can be done like it was for CXGames 8.1.4:
Installation:Install it using these settings:
- Application to install: Unsupported Application, Other Application
- Install from the disk (using the default installer)
- Select bottle: New Windows 98 Bottle
Installation will proceed normally until the very end, then an error about Program Manager will come up. Acknowledge the error and leave it running, eventually it will finish, but will not successfully create an icon to start the program.
Preparing to play:- Change the bottle's settings: (right-click or control-click on the bottle)
- Enable "Use Legacy X Window System"
- Disable "Performance Enhanced Graphics"
- Run "Wine Configuration" to further alter the settings:
- Graphics Tab: Enable "Emulate a virtual desktop" -- Have not tried different sizes, but 800 x 600 works for me.
- Manually locate and run the program:
- Use "Run Command" in the bottle to run: drive_c > MPS > CIV2 > civ2.exe
- Choose "Save Command as a Launcher" if you want to create an icon in the bottle to automate the application launch
Starting and Keeping the Game Running:Aside from the above, automated Heralds and the Civilopedia are the biggest cause of the game crashing. To avoid this, do the following:
- When starting the game, turn off Automated Heralds.
- Once you successfully begin a game, turn off the Civilopedia using the Graphic Options in the Game menu.
This will make the game as stable as I seem to get it. Aside from that, the game may still crash periodically, so I recommend saving frequently.
