BabasChess Tips

Here is what I did to install BabasChess 4.0 under CrossOver 6.2.

From http://www.babaschess.net/download.asp I downloaded Windows XP/Vista installer and BabasChess Graphic Pack.

I created new bottle based on winxp template. Named it 'BabasChess'.

I went through Install unsupported software sequence, picking Other installer file and locating SetupBabasChess_4_0_XP.exe. Installation wizard worked flawlessly

I repeated the process to install SetupBabasChessGraphicPack_1_1.msi in the same bottle. I picked the same installation directory (C:\Program Files\BabasChess). This also worked flawlessly.

Finally I tried spawning the application. It silently failed. Close examination (/opt/cxoffice/bin/wine --bottle BabasChess --verbose BabasChess.exe) shown the problem: rr:module:import_dll Library gdiplus.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\BabasChess\\BabasChess.exe") not found. I did not find any way to install it in a 'proper' way (via CxOffice setup) so I finally copied gdiplus.dll from somewhere to babaschess installation directory. Since then BabasChess started to work.

On first run usual configuration wizard was popped, I filled it as usual, picked expert settings (I am experienced FICS user), default theme and added partial theme-black backround as it is my preference.

Well, installation over. For the sake of testing I played some blitz game (not customizing anything, in particular it meant using external timeseal).
