In a typical nvidia driver install, runtime settings are kept in the user's ~/.nvidia-settings-config file. The values being mishandled are;

0/RedGamma=1.036487                                                                                                  
0/GreenGamma=1.036487                                                                                                
0/BlueGamma=1.036487

These are all getting set interpreted as 0 or less when the game starts, so your whole display goes to black.


So....the only way to repair/recover the situation and run the game, is to reload the current user config. You can't do this
in X after you've started the game, because you can't see anything, but if you the Ctrl-Alt-F1 key sequence to shift to a
normal console, you can login under your username and issue one of the following commands ;

  nvidia-settings --display localhost:0.0 --config="~/.nvidia-settings-config"

...or....

  xgamma -gamma 1.0


Then you can use Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go back to your main Xserver display, lo and behold there's the game, your desktop and all
else that was missing....game itself runs very well too.
