Amazon Kindle for PC Tips

Ubuntu 12.04 Download library problem

Ubuntu 12.04 has a new default value for the kernel variable: ptrace_scope for information click here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Features#ptrace
This is for security purposes but it nags wine in many ways and it is better to deactivate it or put in a more permisive mode.

In order to fix the Kindle problem with Ubuntu 12.04 do the following steps:

Run the following command in terminal:

echo 0|sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope
and then try running Kindle again, library now should download right. If this works, you can make this change permanent by editing the ptrace conf file in sysctl:

sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf

"gedit" can be replaced with your text editor of choice

and changing

kernel.yama.ptrace_scope = 1
to

kernel.yama.ptrace_scope = 0
