To get the game running you will have to follow the following steps:
1. Install Crossover 22.01.
2. Either lookup Age of Mythology Extended Edition and install the bottle setup directly from there (don't install steam first) and you will have the settings and MXML files needed automatically, or Install steam into a windows 7, 32bit bottle, and follow the rest of the instructions:
3. Login to steam, install Age of Mythology Extended Edition.
4. The game will not open past the launcher giving an error "MSXML 4.0 is not installed correctly and is required to run the game", this is due to the fact that the MSXML files packaged with the game are not compatible with windows 7. Installing steam into a windows 10 bottle does not seem to help. To get around this, you will need to open your C: Drive, -> windows -> system 32 -> delete all dll files with the root "msxml" (msxml2.dll, msxml3.dll, etc...) Open C: Drive -> windows -> syswow64 -> delete all msxml files here as well.
5. go back to crossover, click "install application into bottle" search up msxml, install all compatible msxml files.
6. The game should now run.
7. If your game is crashing after the launcher in high resolution mode, then you may need to open the game in window mode. To do this without opening the game (since its crashing), you'll need to enter the C:Drive -> program files -> Steam -> steamapps - > common -> age of mythology -> Users -> open "Default" with a text editor.
8. find the keyword "windowmode" and edit the value beside it from 0 to 1. Save and close the file.
9. Open the game, and as soon as you load to the main menu, open settings, and change your resolution to your native resolution. Alternatively, you may edit your resolution in the same default file as editing windowmode, and you will not have to open in window mode if you do it that way.
10. Now you can play the game in fullscreen.
