If you start a game and the map is black, this can be fixed by using the "nostartup" option when launching the game. If you launch the game using Steam, this can be done by doing the following:
Go to your Steam Library
Right-click on Age of Empires II HD in your games list and select "Properties".
Open "Set Launch Options...", located on the General tab.
Insert the text "nostartup" (without quotes). Click OK, then close the Properties dialog.
