While typing a text into a text layer, key strokes are interpreted as hot keys rather than letters.
Hooray! I think I found a way to fix this:

This HOWTO works for Mandrake Linux, but you should be able to do the same on other distros, though way of doing it will be surely be different.
Launch you Mandrake Control Center, go to system, fonts and install windows fonts into your system.
Now in photoshop, pick text tool, click somewhere on the picture and switch the font to Verdana (or any other windows font). Try typing, it should work now.
