I suggest to install dotnet 2.0, directx & quicktime alternative 1.6.1 to the same bottle before install 3ds max 7.
Then try to install 3ds max 7. When installation done, try to run it as trial(activitaion not work for now, but I'm workin on it). U will see it don't open, 1 plugin blocks to open 3ds max. Delete tthat plugin & try to re-open 3ds max, u will see it works like charm. I still don't know what kind of plugin I've deleted. But animation, rendering, mental ray & the other stuffs works great under Ubuntu.
