No success - Application already running

Unfortunately, I have had zero success in getting XCOM to run on my Mac. Steam installed fine and the game installed perfectly. However, when I try to run it, it says that the application is already running. It seems to be in active memory somewhere as well, because Steam refuses to shut down after the attempt to start the game. Steam will then ask you to shut down XCOM first.

Anyone else have any other issues with the game or maybe some more success with getting it to run?

That's probably because the game is already running 😉

On my system when I ask Steam to run the game, the program XComGame.exe starts up, but it doesn't do anything such as opening any windows to let you know it's running. I can only see it by looking in my process listing. When I click on Play in Steam again, it says applications already running. If I kill XComGame.exe, then I do get to run the game again, but it still won't actually do anything for me.

Cheers,
Lloyd

I normally run my steam games by starting steam and then clicking on the play button in steam because I almost always forget to tick the right boxes that trigger new entries in the CrossOver Mac Programs menu. I did remember to tick the boxes the last time I installed XCOM and for some reason I just selected the XCOM menu entry instead of started steam first. Steam really wigged out when I did that. Is that what you saw Jaap?

I'm pretty sure it's still the failure to exit that's causing this, but trying to run the game this way is a much more spectacular failure.

Cheers,
Lloyd

The game works for me.

Ubuntu 12.04 x64 + nvidia, virtual desktop, cx12.

You might try using a virtual desktop. After starting the game on steam there appears a small UFO-icon on the bottom-left on the virtual desktop. Double-clicking it then opens the game in fullscreen (if it doesn do this itself). Maybe your application IS in fact already running...

I have random crashes if I let the game idle too long during combat. No further issues so far after 15hrs playing.

What is that "Virtual desktop"?

I see the XCOM process that is actually running but no button to open it on the screen.

Mac OS X 10.8.2, cx 12.1.1

With a Unity desktop on linux, it is usually enough to Alt+Tab through the open applications and get to it. For some reason, both Borderlands 2 and XCOM behave like this a.i they open, you can usually hear the sound but appear as being minimized.

If Alt+Tabing is not an option on OS X then you can set a virtual desktop. To do this:

1) Open Crossover and select the bottle where the game is installed
2) select the "Control Panel" tab and then "Wine Configuration"
3) while in the "wine configuration" window, select the graphics tab and you can opt there to create a virtual desktop. Select the resolution you'd like to run your game at and hit "Apply" and then "OK"

Thanks for a hint. However running XCOM did not show up even on virtual desktop :(

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried turning on the Mac Driver to run the game on OS X?

Sorry for an ignorance , but what is that "Mac Driver" and how do I turn it on?

Well, first, it's on Mac OS X only. (And, I'm not certain it will make any difference for this game - as I say, it's curiosity).

If you go to CrossOver's 'Configure' menu and select 'Manage Bottles' you will see a list of your bottles. Select the one which includes XCOM:Enemy Unknown and then click the 'Advanced' tab of the Manage Bottles window.

There's a checkbox for 'Enable Mac Driver' in that window. You can turn on the Mac Driver there.

The Mac Driver is a replacement for the X11 layer on OS X. It changes the way that Windows apps running under CrossOver display windows, and the way they receive keyboard and mouse input.

Cheers,

  Josh.

Thanks for a hint, but I can't check it now as Steam tries to update itself but fails…

Man, sorry ... :(

We have a fix for that which should be out next week. In the meantime, if you want to use Steam, you can download from here:

http://www.codeweavers.com/xfer/duboisj/tmp/steamfix

(use the code 'steamfix' to download, when prompted).

(From this thread:

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=206;forum=1;msg=141790

... in our Steam forum)

Nevermind. I can wait for a fix =)

By the way. Maybe the point is that Steam installs into XP bottle whilst XCOM requires 7 or Vista ?

Don't know - that could be. It's working for folks in CrossOver on Linux, though - I would guess the behavior would be similar (but I'm not 100% certain). I'm hopeful we can get it working.

Cheers,

Josh.

I think Mac users might be encountering this Wine bug. I just got the PC (Steam) version as part of a bundle, ran into the same problem and fell over that link.
