it might be worth trying an install of MDAC before installing any Xara products.
X1 setup kept on failing and the installer failed saying that ie was not found. I followed the link to the error page on their website and found this information:

Webstyle 4 and Xara X¹ require the Microsoft Data Access Components version 2.1 or later.
A minimal install of IE 5 or IE 6 does not include this but it can be installed by adding the "Dynamic HTML Data Binding" component listed in the IE setup program.

they then give a link to MDAC on the Microsoft website. NB This requires genuine advantage validation.

MDAC installed OK. Then X1 setup worked. You need to be connected to the internet during the install as it downloads extra components.

I get an error message on starting X1, but this also happens in real win98. Click OK and the program works well.

Xara X1 also works with CrossOver Office 7.0 on Linux. I installed it in a Windows 98 bottle with Internet Explorer and MDAC 2.7 (no Microsoft validation necessary). With these prerequisites the installation of Xara X1 works without problems.
However, when starting Xara, a error message "2492.k.me.ps" pops up. This problem is solved by registering the WebUpdater.dll in the Xara install with regsvr32: Use "Run a Windows Command" from the Crossover menu, choose the right bottle and type in 'regsvr32 "C:\Programme\Xara\Xara X1\WebUpdater.dll"' (without the outer single quotes, adapt PATH for your installation).
Most parts of the application work without problems.
What does not work:

  • No resizing handles!!!! This is very annoying. Rotating, bevelling and other handles are working, though.
  • Knots, Bezier handles and text column specifiers appear in cyan instead of read, as in a real Windows install.
  • Help is not working.
All in all a "Honorable Mention".

Tried this on Mac and get the same problems as for Linux version. However, can't find ...\Xara\Xara X1\WebUpdater.dll.

Would be great to have this working under CrossOver.

Using CrossOver Mac, you will find the Run Command item in the Programs menu. In the Run Command dialog, you select the bottle with Xara in it, and type the following for the command:

regsvr32 "C:\Programme\Xara\Xara X1\WebUpdater.dll"

I'm just translating Tobias's instructions from Linux to the Mac. I actually don't have any knowledge about getting Xara to work beyond what he said. It's possible that you should type "Program Files" instead of "Programme" in the above. The path is Windows-style. It refers to the C: drive. With CrossOver, this isn't actually a real drive, it's just a folder called "drive_c" inside the bottle folder. On the Mac, the bottle folder can be found at:

(your home folder)/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/(your bottle)

You can look in there to see where Xara is installed, but remember to mentally convert the path back to the Windows-style for use in the Run Command dialog. That is, ignore everything that leads up to the drive_c folder and just use "C:" to stand in for that stuff.
